The Best of Brandywine Creek: Eight Things You Should Do and See in Delaware's Premier Wine Region

Brandywine Creek located at 1080 N. Park Dr., Wilmington is not just the name of a creek and a resort; it’s also the name of Delaware’s premier wine district. The 19-mile stretch of land nestled in between Wilmington and New Castle that is home to five wineries, two micro-distilleries, an orchard, and numerous vineyards. It’s one of the hottest places to see fall foliage in all of Delaware, and it’s also one of the most scenic areas around – perfect for wine-tasting, apple-picking, hiking, and camping. Between all those attractions and more (see below), here are some things you should do if you find yourself in or around Brandywine Creek anytime soon!

Attend a wine and food festival

One of the best times to visit Brandywine Creek is during one of the many wine and food festivals that happen in the area. The most popular of these is the Brandywine Valley Wine Festival (BVFF) that happens each year in late September and early October. This is the signature event of the Brandywine Valley Tourism Association, and it’s one of the largest wine festivals in the United States. Among the various wine-tasting events, food samplings, and exhibits, is the Grand Tasting that happens on the last day of the festival. This is the winery area of the festival, and it is where the majority of the tastings happen. There are also several smaller wine festivals that happen throughout the year including the Harvest Wine Celebration at Mount Pleasant Winery on the second weekend of October and the Delaware Wine Festival at Caledonia Winery the last weekend of October. Take a hike along the Brandywine Creek Greenway

The Brandywine Creek Greenway is a trail that is made up of sections of land that were once railroad and canal. Now, it has become a trail for hiking, jogging, biking, and even canoeing. It’s a great place to go for a walk or hike, especially during the fall when the leaves are changing colors. The Brandywine Creek Greenway is also home to the Brandywine Valley Sock Out Socks, a project that collects and donates new socks to homeless shelters and charities. The Greenway also hosts several events throughout the year including the Boot Camp Booty Bump, Fit in Your Boot, and the Great Pumpkin Run. The Boot Camp Booty Bump is a fitness event that happens in September while the Fit in Your Boot is an event where you can try on military boots and get them evaluated by a specialist. The Great Pumpkin Run is a 5K fun run that happens in October and raises money for the Brandywine Conservancy.

Visit Chateau Morrisette

Nestled in between the Brandywine Creek State Park and the Brandywine Creek Greenway is Chateau Morrisette, one of the premier spots for wine tasting along the creek. Chateau Morrisette is one of the oldest continuously operated wineries in the United States, and it has been in operation since the mid-19th century. In addition to a wide selection of wines, Chateau Morrisette also carries a variety of foods ranging from cheese boards to baked goods. Chateau Morrisette also hosts an annual wine festival in the spring as well as an Oktoberfest event in the fall.

Visit Caledonia Winery

Not only is Caledonia Winery home to some of the best wine in the Brandywine region, but it also hosts one of the best fall festivals in the area. The Caledonia Corn Maze and Harvest Festival is the premier fall festival in Delaware. It’s a massive event with activities ranging from a corn maze (obviously) to a haunted cornfield, a hayride, a pumpkin patch, and a wide variety of food and drink vendors. Caledonia Winery also hosts a Harvest Wine Celebration in October where you can sample new releases and desserts along with live music.

Visit Brandywine Creek Orchards

Brandywine Creek Orchards is the only orchard in the entire Brandywine Creek area. In addition to picking apples, peaches, and other fruits, Brandywine Creek Orchards is also home to a donut shop, cider bar, and a gift shop. It’s a great place to take your family for a day of apple-picking and donut eating during the fall. Brandywine Creek Orchards is also home to a fall festival each year in early October. The festival features a donut eating contest, scarecrow making, apple cider pressing, and a corn maize. Brandywine Creek Orchards is also home to an event called the Apple Harvest Celebration that happens in the summer.

Visit Farer’s Distilling Co.

Farer’s Distilling Co. is one of only two micro-distilleries in all of Delaware. It’s also the only distillery that you can actually visit – the other one, Dogfish Head Brewery, is in Milton and not really accessible to tourists. Farer’s Distilling Co. makes a wide variety of liquor including rum, gin, and vodka. In addition to spirits, Farer’s also makes a variety of liqueurs and flavored whiskeys. Farer’s Distilling Co. hosts a number of events throughout the year including a murder mystery night in October, a holiday open house in December, and a murder mystery during the spring. Visit Mt.

Mt., as the locals call it, is a beautiful state park that overlooks the Brandywine Creek. The park itself is pretty large and offers numerous activities including hiking, biking, and fishing. The park is home to the highest point in all of Delaware, which might not seem like much, but given that Delaware has the lowest elevation of any state in the country, it’s pretty impressive. The park is also home to the Mt. Peace Candle, a memorial that was created after the September 11 attacks by a group of artists called Art for the People. The memorial is a large, illuminated tower that is meant to be a symbol of peace. Brandywine Creek is not just a beautiful place to visit in the fall, it’s a great place to visit all year round.
